Elwyn E. Tilden Jr., Helen H.P. Manson Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, died July 30 in Newville, Pa.
Tilden joined the faculty in 1949 as an associate professor in the Department of Religion. He was named to the Manson professorship in 1951 and held it until his retirement in 1978, when he was elected to emeritus status. He served as department head from 1949 to 1977.

Dr. Elwyn Earl Tilden Jr., Professor Emeritus at Lafayette College, Presbyterian minister, theologian and New Testament scholar, died peacefully July 30, 2010, at Swaim Health Center, Green Ridge Village, Newville Pa.
Born: in Holbrook, Mass., March 24, 1914. Personal: A.B., Harvard University; Th.D., Princeton Theological Seminary. From 1945-49, he taught New Testament and religious ethics at Lincoln University, Oxford Pa. From 1949-78, he taught at Lafayette College, Easton Pa., and served for many years as head of the religion department.
As supply minister, he served many congregations throughout Eastern Pennsylvania and, in later life, in and around Carlisle, Pa. A renowned New Testament scholar, he was widely published. Several generations of students will remember his text “Toward Understanding Jesus” and his study notes for Matthew, Mark, and Luke in the Oxford Annotated Bible.
A gentleman and a gentle man, he led a good and full life. He was much loved and touched the lives of many. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Survivors: He is survived by his son, Harvey Tilden of Brighton, England. He was pre-deceased by his elder son, Elwyn Earl Terry Tilden III, on Nov 12, 1992, and his beloved wife Marguerite on July 30, 1999.
