Lafayette College economics professor Julie SmithMarketplace, the popular public radio business program, reached out to Julie Smith, associate professor of economics, about her views on economic fundamentals in today’s economy.

Program host Kai Ryssdal produced a segment, which aired Sept. 5, about the flip side of a recession that economists are confident is coming, although no one knows when.

Despite recent alarms about an economic downtown, the economy continues to show strength with low interest rates, which are good for consumers, and steady job growth over the past decade, Smith said. “A strong economy is one where jobs are created over time.”

Smith, one of several economics professors quoted in the story, can be heard about four minutes into the segment.
