The music department’s six student ensembles will present their spring performances over the next two weeks. All concerts will be held in the Williams Center for the Arts and are open to the public. Free tickets can be acquired by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009.
The Orchestra will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25. Directed by Stephanie Bell, the concert will feature Gustav Holst’s St. Paul Suite and two pieces by Kirk O’Riordan, assistant professor of music and director of concert band.
A performance by the Percussion Ensemble at 8 p.m. Monday, April 26 will be directed by Larry Stockton, professor and head of music. Come share in the excitement of 21 energetic performers playing marimbas, xylophones, African djembes, Japanese taikos, many varieties of drums, cymbals, tambourines, shakers, and iron spikes. The concert will feature music by John Cage, Dave Brubeck, Gloria Estefan, Rockin’ Rickie Rocket, and more.
The Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 1. Conducted by Emily Wilkins, visiting conductor, and accompanied by Patricia O’Connell and Elizabeth Manus on piano, the one-hour program will present sounds from a wide array of locations, from Italy to South Africa and Central Europe to Brazil.
Jazz Ensemble will give a concert at 8 p.m. Friday, May 7. Under the direction of Ken Brader, the ensemble will perform songs by Louis Armstrong, John Coltrane, and Gerry Mulligan, along with works dedicated to greats such as Gil Evans. Featured musicians include baritone saxophonist Jack Furlong, visiting director of Pep Band, on “The Peacocks” and alto saxophonists Corey Brown ’11 and Lucas Reilly ’13 on “Evelyn.”
At 8 p.m. Saturday, May 8, Concert Band, directed by O’Riordan, will perform works by established master composers Giuseppe Verdi, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Igor Stravinsky. Pieces by major contemporary composers Norman Dello Joio and Dana Wilson, and a commissioned work from Allen and Wendy Pesky Artist-in-Residence William Pfaff will also be included.
The Marquis Consort will perform at 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 9. Directed by Jorge Torres, associate professor of music, this concert will showcase a program of 17th-century English and French music using period instruments. Songs and instrumental works by John Dowland, Antoine Emaraud, Gabriel Bataille, Henry Purcell, and Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre will be featured.
