Kelly Mwaamba '22 is one of Lafayette's summer scholars working closely with faculty mentors to gain hands-on experience and conduct impactful research
Government & Law major and EXCEL Scholar Kelly Mwaamba ’22 regularly spends her summers interning for non-profit legal organizations, but when Prof. Helena Silverstein pitched her the idea of helping with research for an upcoming book on the American judiciary system, Mwaamba jumped at the opportunity.
“The book consists of a variety of different thematic questions that link to ideas about the American judiciary system and its political exposure,” says Mwaamba, who plans to apply to law school. “Primarily, we’re concerned with how partisan processes, such as campaigns or spending strategies, directly and indirectly impact the selection of judges at the state and federal level and how those partisan dynamics impact subsequent judicial decisions,” says Mwaamba, who plans to apply to law school. I hope this research inspires people to participate more frequently in local judiciary activity.”
