The Association of Black Collegians (ABC) is hosting a series of events on campus for Hip Hop Week March 28-April 2.

Students will be urged to work toward positive change by actions such as sending letters to record executives and watching educational films that reveal the larger meaning of hip hop, called “the most important youth culture on the planet” by Time magazine.

“On Monday and Wednesday people will be encouraged to paint mini-murals in the ABC office or attend an informal discussion about the problems with hip hop and what can be done to solve them,” says coordinator Kameisha Hodge ’11 (Washington, D.C.), an English major and president of Association of Black Collegians. “…These sort of things will be interactive and engaging so that students can learn the culture by doing.”

“The subject of hip hop is very near and dear to me; however, I am hoping that people understand – if anything – that hip hop and rap are neither synonymous nor interchangeable,” she says, “that hip hop does have a history that was heavily influenced by Jamaican, African, and Puerto Rican culture, and that hip hop is very, very political, as can be found out in the Politics of Hip Hop Course taught by Professor [Yaba] Blay next semester.”

Events are sponsored by ABC, the African and Caribbean Interest Floor, the Africana studies program, Brothers of Lafayette, LINC, the Office of Intercultural Development, and Questioning Established Sexual Taboos.
