For 159 Lafayette students, January interim meant taking the classroom from College Hill to another part of the world.

From the glaciers of New Zealand, to the streets of Berlin, to the theaters of Dublin, to the coast of Brazil, the eight faculty-led programs allowed students from different majors and disciplines to gain study abroad experience in just three weeks.

Because most students only participate in one study abroad program while at Lafayette, according to Rochelle Keesler, director of study abroad programs, the winter interim courses make studying abroad more accessible for many students.

“A student who may feel hesitant about spending an entire semester away may feel more comfortable going abroad with their peers and a faculty member from the College,” Keesler says. “Some students, such as STEM double majors and student-athletes, have schedules that simply don’t permit an entire semester of study abroad without some serious advanced planning. The interdisciplinary nature and condensed format of these programs allow students to experience the world in an intensive way with the guidance of their Lafayette faculty and support of their peers.”
