Alumni and students came together on campus last month to discuss what it takes to succeed in a career and what new graduates should do when entering the workforce. The second networking conference of this type, it was hosted by the McDonogh Network, Lafayette’s black and African-American alumni association.

The day featured a session with Maureen Walz Boehmer, associate director of special programs at Career Services, who spoke to students and presented them with tips on how to network. This session led into a networking lunch where alumni and students had the opportunity to discuss specific careers and majors that they had in common.
Alumni panels covered topics such as “First Experiences” and “Power of Mentorship and Networking.” These sessions gave students the opportunity to learn about alumni experiences, what to do when entering the workforce, and other tips on how to foster success while they are still on campus and after they graduate. Rexford Ahene, professor of economics and chair of Africana studies, served as moderator.
This year’s panelists included Maurice Bennett ’05, equity sales and trading analyst at Credit Suisse; Terese Brown ’07, designer and owner of Terese Sydonna; Alvin Yearwood ’83, judge in the criminal court of City of New York, Kings County; Cynthia Paige ’83, board-certified family physician with Cypress Health Institute; Samantha Patterson ’11, kindergarten teacher at North Start Academy; Kyara Gray ’11, participant in the insurance operation leadership development program with Travelers Insurance; Shani Bellegarde ’08, analyst at Barclays; and Ashley Gray ’09, graduate hall director in residence life at Cedar Crest College.
