Gregory V. MacDonald, executive director of admissions and administration at the University of Rochester’s William E. Simon Graduate School of Business and former director of undergraduate admissions at the University of Rochester, has been named dean of admissions and financial aid at Lafayette.
The appointment, effective July 1, was announced by Wendy L. Hill, provost and dean of the faculty. Reporting to Hill and serving on the president’s senior staff, MacDonald will be responsible for recruiting a diverse and well-qualified student body and enhancing Lafayette’s reputation and visibility across the United States and around the world.
Hill said, “Greg MacDonald brings more than 17 years of experience in undergraduate and graduate admissions and has provided visionary leadership that helped to transform admissions and aid results at the University of Rochester. He has successfully developed partnerships with schools and colleges leading to impressive outcomes, an important strategy for Lafayette to pursue in the future. We look forward to Greg’s arrival on campus in July.”
“I am honored to be joining a dynamic senior management team at Lafayette and leading the admissions and financial aid efforts in these most challenging times,” MacDonald said. “The College is clearly positioned for success, and I look forward to working closely with the senior administration, trustees, faculty, alumni, current students, coaches, and staff to meet our goals. Together, we will strategically spread the word domestically and internationally about what makes Lafayette a world leader in undergraduate education.”
MacDonald has served as executive director of admissions and administration at the Simon School since July 2005. Before that, he served three years as the University of Rochester’s director of undergraduate admissions, following an equal amount of time as an associate director of admissions.
He was an admissions officer at Case Western Reserve University from 1993 to 1999, serving first as an admission counselor, then as an assistant director, and finally as an associate director.
MacDonald holds a bachelor of arts degree with honors from Carleton University, Ottawa, Ont., where he was a double major in history and sociology. He earned a master of science in higher education, with specialization in student affairs, from Syracuse University. He and his wife, Victoria, are the parents of three children.
At Lafayette, MacDonald will succeed Robert J. Massa, vice president for communications, who served as acting dean during the 2009-10 academic year. The College conducted a national search to fill the position. The search committee was chaired by Hill and included Massa; Jamila Bookwala, associate professor of psychology; Jerry Heavey, professor of economics; Curlee Holton, professor of art; John Nestor associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Shirley Ramirez, vice president for institutional planning and community engagement.
