Lafayette students are holding a benefit concert and logo contest to show their support for the earthquake recovery effort taking place in Haiti. The dance will be from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27 in Farinon College Center.
All donations raised will go to Hands Together, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and serving the needs of the poor in Haiti. It was founded in 1986 by Father Tom Hagan, former Lafayette chaplain, and Doug Campbell ’86 now serves as its executive director.
The logo contest is being done to generate ideas for an image that will unify various student efforts on campus to raise money and awareness for Haiti. The submitted logos must incorporate the words “Lafayette Haiti Response” and “Hands Together” in a unique image that symbolizes the cooperative effort. Submissions can be emailed to wnucks@lafayette.edu as a jpeg attachment by Friday, Feb. 26. The winning entry will be revealed at the benefit concert.
The event Saturday will begin with Lafayette’s female a cappella group, Cadence at 6 p.m., followed by the Kung Fu Girls, a New York City-based pop/rock group at 6:30 p.m., and Soulfege, Lafayette’s mixed a cappella group at 7:30. Rudy Currence will be the featured performer from 8:15-9:30 p.m. and Lafayette’s Tiny Hero Calvary will perform from 9:45-11 p.m.
The evening will end with a dance marathon from 11 p.m.-2 a.m. with music by WJRH, Lafayette’s radio station (104.9 FM).
The benefit is sponsored by Lafayette Activities Forum, WJRH, Writing Organization Reaching Dynamic Students, International Student Association, Landis Community Outreach Center, and Lafayette’s chapter of Amnesty International.
