As executive vice president and chief marketing officer with Brooks Brothers Inc., Mark Friedman '83 heads up marketing for the company's retail and factory outlets and serves as general manager for catalog and online business. He joined Brooks Brothers in March 2000 as executive vice president for e-commerce and direct mail, with responsibility for merchandising, inventory management, creative, Internet and catalog marketing.
Friedman previously held marketing positions for Hanover Direct, Inc., a multi-title catalog company with $550 million annual sales specializing in domestics, gifts, and apparel. He most recently was vice president of marketing for The Company Store and Turiya, two of Hanover Direct's titles. He increased sales for The Company Store from $60 million to $140 million in three years, and launched its initial e-commerce web site in 1998.
An economics and business major, Friedman is a CPA and holds an M.B.A. from Rutgers University. He worked as an auditor with Touche Ross after graduation, leaving in 1986 to help build Tweeds, Inc., a start-up direct mail catalog company offering women's sportswear. He was the fourth employee, joining as controller and later becoming marketing director. He continued to lead the marketing effort after the company was acquired by Hanover Direct in 1993.
Friedman is quick to name Rosie Bukics, professor of economics and business, as an important influence. “She genuinely cared about how you were doing, in class and socially, and how you ultimately were going to craft your career,” he says. “She represents what I think college is all about.”
