“Sometimes I work in Lafayette’s printmaking studio, sometimes in New York,” says Jessica McRorie, a senior English major from Coatesville, Pa., and a graduate of Coatesville Area High School. “I’ve worked on catalogs and books that are used to promote and inform. I’m gaining a lot of hands-on experience with computer programs that aid in the layout process. I’m also having fun!”
Jessica McRorie is honing her art skills and laying groundwork for a career in publishing in a distinctive internship with Curlee Raven Holton, associate professor of art and director of Lafayette’s Experimental Printmaking Institute.
The experience is multifaceted, Holton explains.
“Jessica is working on a number of projects with me this semester, including producing her own digitally imaged artist’s book,” he says. “She’s also working on a limited-edition book to accompany my exhibit ‘Visual Rhythms’ at the Soho Creative Gallery in New York. And she’s producing a catalog for Paul Keene, an artist who will be showing his work on campus next February in conjunction with Black History Month.”
McRorie enjoys the variety within the internship and is particularly pleased that her work brings her into the heart of New York’s art community.
“I am working on various publishing aspects of art. Sometimes I work in Lafayette’s printmaking studio, sometimes in New York, with a graphic designer,” she says. “I’ve also worked on catalogs and books that are used to promote and inform. I’m gaining a lot of hands-on experience with computer programs that aid in the layout process. I’m also having fun!”
Holton says, “Jessica has expressed an interest in publishing for independent magazines and eventually creating her own publishing company. From her work in this internship, I’d say she is well on her way.”
