Psychology major Alison Scudder ’03 (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) offered valuable input for upcoming spreads and wrote editorials for Modern Bride magazine in New York this summer.
During her internship at Modern Bride, Scudder became acquainted with the publishing industry and earned academic credit toward her English minor. She worked closely with Anita Henry, managing editor of the magazine, to learn the ropes of the business.
“I was involved in a number of tasks like performing research for articles, updating public relations files, and writing editorials,” says Scudder. “My internship involved a great deal of writing and research, and I was given the opportunity to meet with photographers and freelance writers for upcoming spreads.”
For Scudder, the most rewarding part of the internship was writing an editorial of her own. “It allowed me to take everything I learned over the summer and produce a piece of work with my name on it. It really made me feel as though I had accomplished something.”
Scudder says that she got a true taste of how to create a full issue of a monthly magazine. “I learned that in order to go into a field like publishing, you have to be a well rounded and open-minded person.”
“I think Lafayette provides opportunities for students to gain distinctive experiences through internships and independent studies,” says Schudder.
A member of the varsity swimming and diving team, Scudder shadowed Christina Seckar ’96, a human resources manager at Schlumberger in Princeton Junction, N.J., during January’s interim session between regular semesters. She learned about employee relations, performance appraisals, compensation, benefits, and general management issues. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
