Lafayette College will hold its 20th annual 24-hour Dance Marathon April 14-15 to benefit The Children’s Home of Easton and the Spring Garden Children’s Center.
All members of the community and campus are welcome to participate in the event, which kicks off at 7 p.m., Friday, April 14, and will conclude 24 hours later. It will be held in Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, at the corner of High and Hamilton Streets.
The event, whose them is “Welcome to the Jungle,” is sponsored by Kappa Delta Rho fraternity and Pi Beta Phi sorority. Chris Meredith of Baltimore, Md., and Gambrelle Snyder of Huntington, N.Y., are chairpersons. For information or to make a contribution, call Snyder, (610) 559-3885.
“We want to keep the tradition alive. We want people to know that it’s a good cause and see charity is needed to help children who are less fortunate than us at Lafayette,” says Snyder, a senior economics and business major.
“We can see visible results,” says Meredith, a junior economics and business major. “It brings fraternities, sororities, and the community together for a philanthropic cause. I’m proud to be a part of dance marathon. We want to make it as strong as possible.”
Live music, DJ’s, games, and activities will supply adrenaline for the dancers as they boogie for 24 hours. Feature bands Mardoux Fox and Tar Beach are scheduled to play from 10 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday.
Music will continue on Saturday when Robert W. Allan, associate professor of psychology, affectionately known by his students as “Behaviorist Bob,” will be a DJ host from noon to 2 p.m.
Also on Saturday, the dancers, community, and members of Lafayette’s Student Government will meet the recipients of their efforts when children from the Children’s Home of Easton arrive to cheer on the dancers between 2-4 p.m.
An exciting lip-synch contest at 4 p.m. Saturday will conclude the festivities. It will feature entrants from campus and the community. Before the announcement of the winners, a raffle will be held with prizes including gift certificates, free dinners at area restaurants, and a night at the Lafayette Inn.
“The contest is an amazing event,” says Meredith. “We’re really proud of it.”
