Marcia B. Hall, professor of art history at Temple University, will speak on “Michelangelo’s Painting for the Sistine Altar Wall” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in room 108 of Lafayette College’s Williams Center for the Arts.
The talk is Lafayette’s Carol P. Dorian ’79 Memorial Lecture for 2000. It is free and open to the public.
Hall, the chair of graduate study in art history at Temple, is the author of , published last year by Cambridge University Press. In it she reevaluates the paintings of Raphael, Michelangelo, Pontormo, Bronzino, and their followers in the light of recent research, taking into account the social, cultural, political, theological, and patronage issues that affected taste and stylistic developments.
Michelangelo: The Sistine Ceiling Restored (Rizzoli, 1993); Color and Meaning: Practice and Theoryin Renaissance Painting (1992), and Renovation and Counter-Reformation: Vasari and Duke Cosimo in Sta Maria Novella and Sta Croce 1565-1577 (1979).
She is editor of Raphael’s “School of Athens” in Cambridge University Press’ Masterpieces of Western Painting series (1997), Color and Technique in Renaissance Painting: Italy and the North (1987), and The Princeton Raphael Symposium: Science in the Service of Art History (1990) with John Shearman.
She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
