As the new executive director of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, Steven D. Luthultz ’76 plans to aggressively promote the use of the Tall Ship Kalmar Nyckel by business, civic, and other groups. The foundation built and maintains a full-size replica of the original Dutch-built, Swedish-owned three-masted armed pinnace (warship), which brought the first permanent European settlers to the Delaware Valley.
“I first became involved with the Kalmar Nyckel as a volunteer in 1997, shortly after the ship was launched,” says Luthultz. “I was involved primarily with the rigging. I was a member of the first sail training class and sailed most of the ship’s first season, following its commissioning May 9, 1998.” With homeport in Wilmington, the ship is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard as a passenger-carrying vessel.
“No one ever forgets their time aboard this ship, and my goal is for many thousands of Delaware students, residents, and visitors to have that experience every year,” says Luthultz, of Hockessin, Del., a psychology graduate. “Wherever she goes, she represents the best of our state’s 364-year heritage.”
