Lafayette donated food ordered for last Saturday’s cancelled tailgate party in Princeton, N.J., to New York City firefighters engaged in rescue efforts at the site of the World Trade Center attacks. Other food intended for the event will support a local blood drive.
Arrangements to donate the food were made following the decision announced last Thursday by Lafayette president Arthur Rothkopf ’55 that all Lafayette athletic events would be canceled through Sunday, Sept. 16, including the scheduled football game against Princeton University. The alumni affairs office arranged for firefighter Stanley Jessamine to deliver the food as he reported to work Sunday morning at New York City Fire Department Engine 7, Ladder 1. He is the husband of Maggie Jessamine, assistant to Lafayette dining services catering director Kurt Weber. Located six blocks from the World Trade Center, Engine 7 covers all of lower Manhattan.
Due to the large quantities, the firefighters gave a portion of the food to the Red Cross. The food delivered to the firefighters included: six bulk containers of three-bean salad, 6.65 lbs of beef bologna, 4.7 lbs of Lebanon bologna, 10 lbs of Monterey Jack cheese, 6 lbs of Muenster cheese, 10 lbs of sliced pepperoni, 121 lbs of turkey breast, 50 lbs of sweet Italian rope sausage, two cases of rigatoni, two cases of elbow macaroni, six bulk containers of sauerkraut, and four 100-lb cases of hot dogs.
In addition, plans have been made for 600 brownies and 30 pounds of cookies from the cancelled tailgate to be donated tomorrow to Miller Memorial Blood Center.
