Students are invited to audition for roles in Translations by Brian Friel, a College Theater production that will be performed Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in the Williams Center for the Arts. Auditions will be held 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11 on the Williams Center main stage.
Acting roles will be cast for seven men and three women. Men auditioning should be prepared to portray an old man. Women should be ready to portray a mute. All students auditioning will take part in short vocal exercises in Irish and British accents. Some will do readings from the script; familiarity with the play is helpful. Scripts are available for 24-hour perusal at Williams Center room 132.
The following is College Theater’s summary of the play: “The British army’s mapping of Ireland in 1833 – both actual and cultural – provides the historical starting point for a dazzling theatrical journey into the complexities of languages spoken and unspoken, alive and dead, understood and misunderstood. Rich in details of a lost way of life, this modern Irish masterpiece, in the tradition of John Millington Synge and Sean O’Casey, dramatizes a struggle for national identity that continues to embroil Ireland today.”
