Lafayette recognized outstanding achievement and contributions at its 16th annual Multicultural Senior and Undergraduate Student Awards and Diversity Recognition Reception on April 28.
Senior Tiffany D. Blakey, an American studies major from Philadelphia, Pa., received both the Leroy D. Nunery ’77 Award for Intellectual Citizenship and the Leadership Award.
Other students receiving awards were Angela K. Neal ’01 (Germantown, Md.), Academic Scholarship Award; Mary K. Barillas ’04 (Bethlehem, Pa.) and Leslie A. Saint ’04 (Dunellen, N.J.), Chakrabarti Foundation Scholarship Award; Olivia K. Clarke ’01 (Mineola, N.Y.), Academic Improvement Award; Eui-Young Chon ’04 (New Delhi, India), Inspring Student Leader Award; Bora M. Tokyay ’01 (Istanbul, Turkey), David A. Portlock Award; and Bruce D. Edwards ’01 (Margate, Fla.), Volunteer Service Award.
The Student Organization Award went to Minority Scientists and Engineers. Prof. Gladstone A. Hutchinson, assistant professor of economics and business, received the Faulty Award.
According to Elisha J. Nixon, assistant dean of studies, a quote by actor Danny Glover epitomizes the purpose of the event and, more importantly, the mission of the college: “The message or idea that we want to convey is that diversity is about honoring and celebrating our interdependence, our basic humanness. It’s the very best of who we are.”
“Lafayette prides itself in encouraging students, faculty, and staff to examine their own traditions, value systems, and attitudes with the conscious intention of understanding and promoting an environment that affirms the basic humanness of all individuals,” adds Nixon.
The event was sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Studies, the International Affairs program, the Office of Intercultural Development, and the Landis Community Outreach Center.
