While the weather is cold on campus this January, we have a special event that will warm you up. Join us for a fascinating look at Edgar Degas’ work in 19th-century Paris during a private tour Sunday, Feb. 16 of “Degas and the Dance” at Philadelphia Museum of Art. LAFAYETTE TO HOST GIFTED PRECOLLEGIATE STUDENTS IN SUMMER
Lafayette will host more than 500 of this country’s most gifted pre-collegiate students this summer through a prestigious academic program coordinated by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Talented Youth. Lafayette’s excellent facilities were a major reason for selection as program host.

TREGGER ’03 ONE OF NATION’S TOP CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS
Nathan Tregger ’03 was honored as one of the nation’s top undergraduate engineering students in the December issue of the national magazine CE News. He is among 34 “exceptional” students featured.

Alumni from classes ending in 3s and 8s will celebrate Reunion June 6-8. The Reunion 2003 packet with information and registration materials will be mailed in February; online registration with credit cards will be available beginning March 15.

SMITH RECEIVES GRANT FROM NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR HUMANITIES
Andrea Smith, assistant professor of anthropology, received a $24,000 fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities to complete work on her book about the social memory of “pieds-noirs,” former Algerian settlers or colonists who moved back to France in 1962.

FERRI RECEIVES GRANT FROM GERMAN INSTITUTE TO CONTINUE RESEARCH
James Ferri, assistant professor of chemical engineering, received a grant from the Max Planck Institute in Golm-Potsdam, Germany to continue research on the behavior of lipids, the building blocks of biological cell membranes.

KEY PAPERS ON INCOME REDISTRIBUTION BY HOCHMAN PUBLISHED
Selected papers by Harold Hochman, William Simon Professor of Political Economy, including key papers on income redistribution and policy, have been published by Edward Elgar, Ltd. Hochman’s contributions to the theoretical discussion of distributive justice are widely cited and have had a lasting impact.

A CAPPELLA GROUPS IN ICCA QUARTERFINALS; TO COMPETE IN MARYLAND AND DELAWARE
Both of Lafayette’s a cappella groups have made it to the quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, a first for Lafayette. Cadence will perform February 1 at 7 p.m. at the University of Maryland. The Chorduroys will perform March 1 at 8 p.m. at the University of Delaware. For tickets:

ATHLETIC TEAMS ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE IN CLASSROOM AND FIELD
Nearly 60 percent of Lafayette’s student-athletes achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average for fall semester. The women’s volleyball team finished with the highest GPA among women’s teams, and men’s tennis led the men’s squads.
