For his outstanding work with graduate students, Charles Epifanio ’66, professor of marine studies, received the University of Delaware’s 2002 Outstanding Graduate Student Mentoring and Advising Award. The new award honors faculty members “whose dedication to graduate students and commitment to excellence in graduate training have made a significant contribution to the quality of life and professional development of graduate students at the University of Delaware.”
Epifanio joined the faculty in 1971, where he has served as marine biology-biochemistry program director and associate dean for the College of Marine Studies. His research focuses primarily on the blue crab and the biological factors that affect year-to-year variations in crab population, including the biology of marine larvae and early juveniles.
One of Epifanio’s articles was published in the Nov. 8, 2002 issue of Nature.
Epifanio, a biology graduate, earned his Ph.D. from Duke University. “Like many undergraduate biology students, I initially was interested in a career in the health sciences. But my interests turned to research,” he says. “Professor Bernie Fried was an important influence.”
