America’s waistline is widening, but not for long if Willliam “Bill” Curry ’64 has anything to say about it. His ambition to promote healthy living led to the invention of Powerseed, an electronic weight loss coach that fits easily into a pocket or purse.
According to Curry, president and chief executive officer of Capticom, Inc., Walpole, N.H., Powerseed provides around-the-clock assistance, helping users slow eating, reduce food consumption, reframe counterproductive thoughts, and monitor daily successes by providing feedback via visible signals or soft audible tones.
“In this world, our minds are everywhere,” he says. “We tend to make New Year’s resolutions, and then our minds wander. This coaching system helps keep weight loss goals in focus. It is amazing how many calories you can avoid just by being mindful.”
“My Lafayette experience helped me learn how to think critically and solve problems, which has certainly served me well,” Curry says. “I was able to combine writing with engineering — two facets that have shaped my life.”
Curry says developing Powerseed was different than any venture he tackled before. “It is an entrepreneurial project. You have to start from scratch and wear every hat. But, in the end, it’s worth it because you are helping people and enabling healthy living.”
A metallurgical engineering graduate, Curry earned a master’s degree in natural resource planning from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to forming Capticom, he was president and chief operating officer of Babcock Florida Company and its subsidiaries. He is a lifelong conservation activist.
