Gladstone (Fluney) Hutchinson, dean of studies, will lead a “Phire Pside Chat” discussion on “How to Make a Good College Great and How the Greek System Can Help,” 7 p.m. today at Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.
Open to the campus community, the event will include comments from Hutchinson and a period for questions and answers. Refreshments will be served.
“The Greek system is probably the system that best organizes student efforts at Lafayette right now,” says Hutchinson. “It has many of the outstanding students; the president of the student body is involved in Greek living, and so are a number of service organizations. What I’m trying to do is help them appreciate how important a role they play in Lafayette as a great institution.”
Greek life has been an important participant in Lafayette’s ascent as a college, he notes.
“I’m not going to tell the students what they have to do, but how they can contribute, and I’ll get their judgment about how they can help me with my mission in terms of Lafayette’s commitment to intellectual citizenship,” says Hutchinson. “I want to hear their ideas and I’m looking forward to working with them in building the campus community as we move forward. It should be interesting.”
