William Miles, associate professor of chemistry, co-authored a paper on Prozac with two Lafayette students that was recently published in the journal Tetrahedron (2001, 57, 9925-9929), entitled “The Enantioselective Synthesis of (S)- and (R)-Fluoxetine Hydrochloride.”
Co-author Elizabeth Fialcowitz ’98 is in her fourth year of graduate school at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. “I am using NMR to determine the structure of gp16, a T4 bacteriophage protein, which is the small subunit of the terminase enzyme involved in DNA packaging,” she says.
Co-author Scott Halstead ’96 reports, “Right now I’m trying to wrap up my Ph.D. in immunology, specifically working on costimulation requirements for CD8+ T cells. I’m in my fifth year of the combined program and should return to medicine for my ‘third and fourth year’ rotations in July. I attend MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine (soon we will be merging with Drexel and will become MCP Hahnemann SOM of Drexel University).”
