FOUR STUDENTS WIN PRESTIGIOUS GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS
Elizabeth Ponder ’04, Gabriella Engelhart ’05, Alison Campbell ’04, and Meghan Ramsey ’04 have received prestigious Goldwater Scholarships, the premier undergraduate award of its type in the fields of mathematics, science, and engineering. Only 300 students were chosen across the U.S.

MURPHY TO BE FEATURED ON C-SPAN’S “BOOK TV” MARCH 22 & 23
Bruce Allen Murphy, Fred Morgan Kirby Professor of Civil Rights, will be featured on C-Span’s “Book TV” Saturday, March 22 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 23 at 11 p.m. Murphy is the author of Wild Bill: The Legend and Life of William O. Douglas, a biography of the controversial Supreme Court justice.

NEW YORK TIMES FEATURES RESEARCH OF NILES ON INCAN CITY
The research of Susan Niles, professor of anthropology, is featured in a major story in the March 18 edition of The New York Times about the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu.

STUDENTS DESIGNING STEEL BRIDGE MODEL FOR COMPETITION
Six civil engineering majors are creating a steel bridge model that will be entered in the National Steel Bridge Competition sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction. The students will design, fabricate, and construct a bridge that spans 25 feet over a mock river while supporting 2,500 pounds of load.

BORLAND ’06 WINS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH
Joe Borland ’06 won the national championship in extemporaneous speaking and was runner-up in impromptu speech at the 21st annual Novice National Forensics Tournament March 1-2 in Oklahoma.

NERSESIAN ’06 HAS LETTER PRINTED IN NEW YORK TIMES FOR CLASS
A letter to the editor about reality television by Sara Nersesian ’06 ran in the February 27 New York Times. It was part of a sociology assignment to read the Times, find stories of sociological interest, and write letters to the editor.

23 STUDENTS PRESENT WORK AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Twenty-three students presented their scholarly research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research March 13-15 in Salt Lake City. This year’s presenters brought to more than 400 the number of Lafayette students who have participated.

WESTFALL COEDITS BOOK ON SHAKESPEARE AND PATRONAGE
Suzanne Westfall, professor of English and theater, is coeditor of the first extensive study of patronage as it relates to Shakespeare and the theatrical culture of his time. Shakespeare and Theatrical Patronage in Early Modern England was published by Cambridge University Press.

Basketball guard Winston Davis ’04 has been named to the 2003 All-Patriot League Tournament Team. He was the only player selected that did not play in the championship game.

Forward Mike Farrell ’04 has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District II Men’s Basketball Team. He is one of just five student-athletes selected in District II.

SEVEN FIELD HOCKEY PLAYERS NAMED TO NATIONAL ACADEMIC TEAM
Seven members of the Patriot League Championship field hockey team were named this month to the 2002 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Academic Team. The Leopards finished 2002 ranked 20th in the nation with a 19-3 record.
