For his outstanding work in group therapy, Dr. Henry Spitz ’61 received the Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education and Training in the Field of Group Psychotherapy, presented by the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists. The award honors an individual who has made unique contributions in training, standards, and ethical practice in group therapy. Spitz is clinical professor of psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and director, group psychotherapy and family therapy training program, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
In nominating him, Dr. David Brook wrote, “Over the past 30 years, Spitz has been instrumental in the training of a generation of group therapists from all professional disciplines.”
Spitz serves on the editorial board of International Journal of Group Psychotherapy and is author, coauthor, or coeditor of six books. His seventh book, to be published in 2003, will discuss group approaches for the psychological effects of terrorism or catastrophic disaster.
“Group psychotherapy has been around since after World War II,” says Spitz. “It’s applicable in many situations, such as substance abuse, couples and family therapy, and cases of psychological trauma.”
A certified group psychotherapist and fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, Spitz is a biology graduate and received an M.D. from New York Medical College.
