Rain put a damper on their tennis tournament, but it didn’t stop Chi Phi fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority from raising $3,000 for victims of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), a degenerative lung disease that affects only women.

Rain wiped out most of the tennis planned for the April 26 tournament at Sullivan Lane courts, which was unable to be rescheduled, explains event organizer Ryan Shaffer ’03, a government and law major from Morris Plains, N.J. However, fundraising produced $3,000 for the LAM Foundation. Founded in 1995, the organization provides support and education to women with LAM, a progressive, debilitating lung disease.

“There is no known cure, and the foundation is relatively small,” says Shaffer. “We found out about it because one of Chi Phi’s brothers has an aunt with the disease. Thus, this charity has personal significance to all of the people who planned the tournament.”

Further donations can be made through checks written to the LAM Foundation and sent to The Chi Phi Fraternity, Farinon Center Box 9448, Lafayette College, Easton, PA 18042.

Lafayette’s sororities and fraternities devote a significant amount of time every year to collectively raising over $20,000 for philanthropic causes and volunteering in the community (see related story).
