FOUR HONORARY DEGREES TO BE AWARDED AT COMMENCEMENT
Honorary degrees will be awarded May 24 to Commencement speaker Vartan Gregorian, president of Carnegie Corp. and former president of Brown University; Baccalaureate speaker Rebecca Chopp, president of Colgate University; Brent Glass ’69, director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History; and Rev. Fred Davis Sr., pastor of Easton’s Shiloh Baptist Church.

PROFESSOR OF MATHEMATICS JAMES CRAWFORD DIES
James Crawford, professor of mathematics, died May 8 at age 68. He had taught at Lafayette since 1957. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 22 at 10 a.m. in Colton Chapel, followed by a reception in the Wilson Room, Pfenning Alumni Center.

HART ’05 AMONG 80 AWARDED UDALL SCHOLARSHIPS NATIONALLY
Hart Feuer ’05 (Portland, Ore.), who is double majoring in economics and business and German, is one of 80 students nationwide who have been honored as recipients of Morris K. Udall Scholarships.

STUDENT OFF-ROAD VEHICLE ENTERS NATIONAL COMPETITION
Three mechanical engineering seniors are constructing an off-road vehicle for the Society of Automotive Engineers Mini-Baja West Competition May 28 at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. Jonathan Elam (Naples, N.Y.), Ryan Rubino (Brookline, Mass.), and Dane Brodber (Kingston, Jamaica) are advised by Leonard Van Gulick, Baird Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

MOLEK ’03 RECEIVES NSF GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP
Chemical engineering major Jessica Molek ’03, a Marquis Scholar, has received a prestigious three-year graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation, worth $38,000 annually. Molek (Reedsville, Pa.) will pursue a Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University.

SMITH RECEIVES FELLOWSHIP FOR STUDY OF ELIZABETHAN THEATER
Ian Smith, associate professor of English, has been awarded a fellowship from the Folger Shakespeare Library to continue his groundbreaking research on “racial cross-dressing,” the portrayal of blacks by white actors in Elizabethan theater.

DANCE MARATHON RAISES $9,000 FOR EASTON CHILDREN
About $9,000 has been raised for Spring Garden Children’s Center and the Children’s Home of Easton through a dance marathon sponsored by Pi Phi sorority and Kappa Delta Rho fraternity and donations from members, fellow students, local residents, parents, alumni, and friends.

JOIN ALUMNI AT NEW YORK CITY PHONATHON MAY 21
Alumni are needed May 21 to call classmates to encourage them to come to Reunion and ask for donations to Lafayette’s annual fund. Less than 1,600 donors are needed to reach the goal of 44 percent alumni participation. TAMBELLINI ’03 NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT BASEBALL SQUAD
Matt Tambellini ’03 (Millville, N.J.) has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District II baseball squad. Tambellini, a double major in economics and business and English, is the only player from a Patriot League institution to earn a first-team selection.

MONAHAN ’03 NAMED TOP FEMALE ATHLETE
The Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women recently honored Megan Monahan ’03 (Lansdale, Pa.) as the Leopards’ top female athlete for 2002-03. Monahan, an economics and business major, guided the field hockey team to the 2002 Patriot League Championship, capturing All-League, ECAC, and All-America honors.

FOOTBALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
Seven home contests highlight the 2003 football schedule. The Leopards open their 122nd season by hosting Marist Sept. 6 in a non-league contest at Fisher Field. The season ends with the 139th meeting of Lafayette-Lehigh Nov. 22 in Bethlehem.
