In his first book, Good Enough to be Great, Washington Post sportswriter Joshua J. “Josh” Barr ’94 tells the remarkable story of the University of Maryland’s 2001-02 NCAA championship basketball season, providing behind-the-scenes accounts of the Terrapins’ drama. Barr, who has covered University of Maryland athletics for four years, enjoyed unrivaled access to the team’s players and coaches, including Head Coach Gary Williams, a former Lafayette assistant basketball coach and head soccer coach. He shows how they coped with daunting expectations, unwanted distractions, and even tragedy on the way to their first national championship.
Michael Wilbon of ESPN and the Washington Post wrote in the foreword, “Nobody knew this team better than Josh . . . He knows the story inside and out. And it’s an amazing story.” The book was published in January by Regnery Publishing.
An American Studies graduate, Barr has been a sportswriter with the Post for seven years. He played tennis at Lafayette but fondly recalls walking across campus on cold nights to play pickup basketball in the old Alumni Memorial Gym.
