Imation Corp., a removable data storage media company, has appointed Richard G. Weiss ’71 vice president of research and development.
He is responsible for global integrated research and development operations for the company’s data storage customer sectors, spanning business-to-business and consumer markets and encompassing magnetic and optical products. He is based at the company’s headquarters in Oakdale, Minn.
Weiss has extensive professional research and development and manufacturing knowledge, including more than a decade of experience in magnetic media development and commercialization with both 3M and Pfizer. Most recently, he was technical director for 3M’s Microreplication Technology Center, leading a key division that is an integral part of the manufacturing supply chain for all of 3M’s microreplicated products.
Before leading the microreplication technology center, Weiss was both technical director for the specialty film laboratory and senior technical director for 3M Europe. He sponsored the invention, development, and staffing of 3M’s multi-layer optical film that uses 1,000 micro-layers to manage light and effectively double the brightness of a notebook computer display. This product uses technology that has spawned more than 30 patents.
Previously, Weiss served in various technology development capacities at 3M and Pfizer, including leadership in advancement efforts in laboratory and product design, computer tape products, diskettes and commercial audio and video tape.
A chemistry graduate, Weiss earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from University of Virginia. He conducted post-doctoral research at both University of Virginia and Iowa State University, and has published 13 articles in major scientific journals.
