Midnight Mountaineering, a Latin dance party, varsity volleyball and field hockey, and a live band are on the schedule of campus events this weekend. Two trips to different areas of New York City also are on tap.
Midnight Mountaineering will include climbing, a presentation by an experienced mountaineer, food, drinks, and more, starting 11 p.m. tonight at the rock wall in Kirby Sports Center. Wrapping up at about 2 a.m. Saturday, the event is offered free of charge.
“The event is held in celebration of both the discipline of mountaineering (rock climbing being a sub-discipline) and Lafayette’s superior indoor wall,” says organizer Nate Tyson ’04, a double major in civil engineering and geology. “It is open to all members of the Lafayette community, serving as an introduction to those unfamiliar with rock climbing, and also providing a fun time for those who already appreciate this burgeoning adventure sport. Last year, the event was a great success, and this year we hope for the same. There is no need for participants to have any climbing experience whatsoever; just show up with a willing spirit, ready to have fun!”
The second Noche Tropical dance party will be held 11:30 p.m. tonight through 2:20 a.m. Saturday in the Farinon Center Atrium. Students are invited to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by dancing to Latin pop, club, house, and traditional music. The free event is sponsored by Hispanic Society of Lafayette and Recreational Services.
On Saturday, the resurgent volleyball team will take on Seton Hall at 11 a.m. and Wagner at 3 p.m. as part of a tournament in Kirby Sports Center. Co-captain Heidi Olichwier ’05 and Veronica Canto-Ponce ’07 were named Baden Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, by the Patriot League on Sept. 15.
In a key Patriot League matchup, the field hockey team will take on American University 11 a.m. at Rappolt Field, then host Cornell 1 p.m. Sunday. The Leopards received 49 votes in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Weekly Poll. Womensfieldhockey.com also placed Lafayette 16th in the national Top 20 after impressive wins over Penn State and current NFHCA No. 20 Richmond.
The rock band Towncrier, whose sound has been described as comparable to Incubus and Creed, will give a concert 4:30-6 p.m. on March Field. The group has shared the stage with performers such as George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic and Rearview Mirror. The event is sponsored by Lafayette Activities Forum.
A trip to El Barrio (Spanish Harlem) will depart the Williams Center for the Arts 8 a.m. Saturday. For information on participating, call the Williams Center at x5556.
The Arts Society is sponsoring a trip to the Saturday matinĂ©e of Movin’ Out, a musical featuring Billy Joel and Twyla Tharp. The bus will leave the Williams Center at 9 a.m. to allow time for sight-seeing and lunch before the 2:00 p.m. performance. It will depart the Richard Rodgers Theatre right after the show. Tickets cost $30 for Arts Society members and $40 for non-members; Lafayette ID is required. To inquire about ticket availability, call Allison Blatt, Williams Center operational director, at x5011.
