Late touchdowns in both football championships and a red card in soccer have helped set the intramural standings, where the first-place teams in the four divisions are Kappa Delta Rho, Tri-Delt, Watson Hall men, and PT Farinon women. (Complete standings and links to previous reports are posted at the bottom of this article.)
Organizations in first place at the midpoint of the semester celebrated with an Oct. 20 ice cream social sponsored by Recreation Services. Pizza parties will be held at the end of the semester for groups topping the standings then.
Kickball — it’s not just for recess and gym class anymore. At least that’s one possible conclusion after a total of 70 students participated in tournaments held Oct. 9-10 on March Field. Among the men, the Screaming Larvae of Zeta Psi fraternity booted their way to the top, led by Championship Most Valuable Player Greg Lullo. The team recovered from a loss to Delta Upsilon earlier in the tournament to defeat it in the championship. Conway House finished third. In the women’s tournament, the strong legs of Delta Gamma carried the team to an undefeated run to first place. Delta Gamma’s players were Championship MVP Lisa Cosenza, Jess Goman, Sam Molyneauz, Kelly Nash, Sofia Kourtesis, Chrystie Neidhardt, Lauren Elkin, Ashley Brown, Melanie Fraine, Jen Gsell, Cat Lewis, and Alyssa Picchini. Pi Phi finished second and Alpha Phi was third.
In the men’s soccer championship, after an opposing player received a red card, the Ruef Riders of Ruef Hall followed up immediately with a goal, which proved to be the game’s only score. The ejection helped the freshmen squad secure an improbable upset of the Scrubs — comprised of senior former varsity soccer players — in the conclusion of a tournament lasting from Sept. 16-Oct. 16 on Newlin Fields. Captain Josh Gordon earned Championship MVP honors and was joined by teammates Michael Leff, Matthew Weiss, Jeremy Turner, Joe Danatzko, Mike Brown, Chris Sweitzer, and Ben Kaplan. The unaffiliated Ninja Turtles and Team Venom tied for third place among the 11 participating men’s teams. In the women’s division, the Whalers, an independent team of former varsity soccer players, went undefeated to win the title. The D-Funk squad of Parsons Street residents finished second.
In the recreational league’s flag football tournament, held Sept. 8-Oct. 9 at Newlin Fields, The Process scored two touchdowns in the last two minutes, including one with six seconds left, to defeat Watson Hall’s Tecmo Super Bowl squad by one point in the championship. The Process included Championship MVP Luke Landherr, Brian Root, Brian Jennings, Ryan Van Horn, chemical engineering professor James Ferri, and Matt Root. In the Greek division, FIJI’s Team Israel defeated Kappa Delta Rho in the sixth overtime to win the championship. In every overtime, each team started 10 yards from the end zone and had four downs to score. Team Israel included Joe Goldberg, Noah Payne, Harrison Richter, Nick Hargus, Kevin Colantropo, Mike Cohn, Justin Milhalinec, and Tyler Papaz. A total of 138 men competed in the two tournaments.
Published poet Molefi Asante of Brothers of Lafayette used his skills as a wordsmith to blow way the competition in the Oct. 10 Scrabble tournament at Gilbert’s. Asante posted the highest score in all three rounds of play. He was followed by Eric Bryant of McKeen Hall and Josh Goldstein of PT Farinon.
The Glass Joe team lost to fellow independent squad Sprained Ankles in the regular season of five-on-five basketball, but turned the tables in the championship on Sept. 25 to earn a decisive 15-8 victory. Championship MVP Ben Saxton led teammates Patrick Doherty, Eric Smoczynski, Sam Innes, and Jeff Childs. The Wonder Lamas of Easton Hall tied Kappa Delta Rho (A squad) for third place.
The superior strategy of International Students Association’s Marciano DeSouza earned him first place in the chess tournament held Sept. 29-30 at Gilbert’s. Runner-up Ryan McCall tied ISA’s Oliver Bowen in the first attempt at a semifinal match, then made it to the championship by virtue of winning his pool before losing to DeSouza. Bowen and Jesse Nickerson of Delta Kappa Epsilon tied for third place.
Alex Karapetian wielded a powerful racquet in taking the tennis tournament, held Sept. 24-Oct. 18 on the Sullivan Lane Courts. Independent Andrew Schanck earned second place and Brian Kronenthal of PT Farinon was third.
