“The word ‘Kwanzaa’ is derived from the Swahili phrase ‘first fruits.’ It is a spiritual, festive, and joyous celebration of the oneness and goodness of life,” says organizer Ryan Higgs ’06, a civil engineering major from Nassau, Bahamas. “It is rooted in the harvest celebrations practiced in various cultures in Africa.”
