Music department events this week include three sessions of student recitals; a senior project presentation about female bands during the swing era; and concerts by the Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Quintet, and Concert Choirs.

Under the direction of Neal Kirkwood, the Jazz Quintet will perform 6 p.m. today in the Williams Center for the Arts. The group features Jack Furlong ’05, baritone sax and flute; Dave Mitchell ’05, bass trombone and piano; Sean Comerford ’06, bass; Ing-Chea Ang ’04, drums; and Kirkwood, piano and vibes. The ensemble is this year’s version of the Jazz Combo that debuted last year. The program will include a ballad medley arranged by the quintet; the Charles Mingus tune “Nostalgia in Times Square” and the Super Mario Brothers theme song, both arranged by Furlong; “Over the Rainbow” by Arlen/Yarburg, arranged by Ang; and three other selections.

The String and Wind Chamber Ensembles of this semester’s Performance Class will give a recital 7 p.m. today in Interfaith Chapel, Hogg Hall. Refreshments will be served.

Led by director Marka Young, the String Ensemble will begin the program with Four Pieces for String Quartet, op.81, by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47). The group includes Elizabeth Dethoff ’05 and Teruhisa Haruguchi ’07, violins; Susan Bagley-Koyle, viola; and Lori Astheimer ’05, cello. The pieces were composed in the last summer of the composer’s life and published posthumously in 1850.

“A performance class is where students work out all the kinks that invariably happen when performing and is not meant to be a final, polished product,” notes Young. “It can be very interesting to watch, especially if you know the goal of the whole event, which is to expose students without judgment to the challenges of playing well in front of other people.”

The rest of the evening will feature students of Susan Charlton, director of wind chamber ensembles. The Flute Choir will perform Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) and Salsita by Victor Rojas (1948-). The choir is comprised of Beth Ponder ’04, piccolo; Katy Brodhead, Charlton, Elena Dones ’07, Amy Leibowitz, Danielle Martin ’06, and Megan Conway ’06, flutes; Caroline Dawson, alto flute; and Jessica Goldblat ’06, bass flute.

The Wind Quintet will present Menuet by B.M. Colomer, Candon from Suite, op.57 by Charles Lefebvre (1843-1917) and Rustic Holiday by Paul Koepke. The group includes Janine Tkach ’06 and Charlton, flute; Abigail Frueh ’04, clarinet; Carrie Fritsche ’07, horn; and Laura Fredley ’06, bassoon.

The Clarinet Choir will conclude the evening with Praeludium and Fugue in D minor by J.S. Bach (1685-1750), Italian in Algiers Overture by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868), Introduction and Rondo by Gordon Jacob (1895-1984), and A Study in Contrasts by Sammy Nestico (1924-). The ensemble features Jessica Cygler ’07, Ben Doremus ’07, Lisa Klenn ’06, Sarah Smith ’07, Carolyn Waite ’06, and Alyssa Wiley ’05, clarinets; Magee Perini ’05, soprano clarinet; Toby Heineck ’06, alto clarinet; and David Greenberg ’06, bass clarinet.

Noon recitals also will be presented in Williams Center for the Arts room 123. Voice, piano, and saxophone recitals will take place Wednesday, while voice, piano, and Guitar Ensemble recitals will be held Friday.

The Jazz Ensemble will play with internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller 8 p.m. Thursday in the Williams Center for the Arts.

The Concert Choirs will give their annual winter concerts 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Williams Center.

Abigail Frueh ’04 (Havertown, Pa.), a double major in music and psychology, will present her senior project on the musical careers of women during the swing era 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, in Williams Center for the Arts room 123. Refreshments will be provided.
