A jazz concert, a jazz and dance performance, a punk concert, women’s and men’s basketball, fencing, screenings of Love Actually, and a dinner discussion are on this weekend’s schedule of campus events.
Easton native and internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller will lead his Wingspan quintet in a performance with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company tonight and in a concert tomorrow, both at 8 p.m. at the Williams Center for the Arts. Wingspan is one of the top touring bands in American jazz. Mulgrew Miller and Kevin Ward, artistic director of DCDC, will give a composer’s talk 7 p.m. tonight. Left Front Tire will perform its sing-along punk rock music 9 p.m. tonight at the Farinon Center Snack Bar. The free concert is sponsored by Lafayette Activities Forum. The band appears on the American Pie 2 soundtrack and has sold more than 5,000 copies of the independent release Social Icon. It had the top-selling CD for 2002 on Athensmusic.net, an online retail store for all Athens, Ga., music. It has toured Scotland, England, and Wales, headlined a Warped Tour date in Atlanta, and performed during Atlanta’s inaugural On the Bricks concert series. The band also has written and recorded soundtrack songs for New Line Cinema.
The women’s basketball team will chase its elusive first win 1 p.m. Saturday as it hosts Holy Cross at Kirby Sports Center. Despite a game high 24 points by biology major Colleen Fitzpatrick ’04 (Springfield, Pa.), the team fell to Army, 62-55, last Wednesday.
The men will protect their first-place standing in the Patriot League when they tip off against the Crusaders at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday Four players scored in double figures as the Leopards defeated Army, 78-70, last Wednesday.
The fencing team will host Cornell, St. John’s, and Johns Hopkins in a tournament 11 a.m. Sunday at Kirby Sports Center. The team won one of four matches at Drew University last Sunday, a 20-7 victory over Steven’s Institute.
Lafayette Activities Forum will screen the film Love Actually 7 and 10 p.m. today and Saturday, and 10 p.m. Sunday through Tuesday, in the Farinon Center’s Limburg Theater. Tickets cost $2. The film is rated R for sexuality, nudity, and language. Set in contemporary London, this film follows 10 different but intertwining love stories as they intertwine and lead to a climax at Christmas Eve.
The McKelvy House Scholars will host a dinner discussion Sunday evening on the concept of eternity. Dinner will begin 6 p.m. at McKelvy House, 200 High Street; RSVP by Saturday to connerr or x4035. Led by Creighton Conner ’04 (Lewisburg, Pa.), a double major in English and American studies, the discussion will start at 6:30 p.m. and requires no reservations.
