Former Philadelphia Eagles tight end Ray Sydnor talked about his football career and other experiences Monday night in Kirby Sports Center room 229.
Free and open to the campus community, the event was sponsored by Lafayette’s chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Light refreshments were served.
Raised in Baltimore’s inner city, Sydnor was an all-state quarterback in football and center in basketball. He earned an athletic scholarship at University of Wisconsin, where he played center on the last college team to defeat Magic Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans.
Sydnor’s football skills earned him selection as a third-round draft pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was traded to Philadelphia before his rookie season started and became a member of the team that went to the SuperBowl. However, he didn’t get to play in the big game.
“I had the skills to play a lot of years in the league,” he says. “I was 6-9, 225 (pounds) and could run a 4.4 40-yard dash. But I was in the league for only two years.”
