The Engineers Without Borders (EWB) student group has organized an EWB 5K run/walk for Sunday, May 2, as a fundraiser to benefit its goal of helping developing nations.

In a project scheduled to take three to five years, the students are designing and will eventually implement a clean water distribution system, as well as irrigation, for four rural communities in Yoro, Honduras. The group will make a presentation of its goals Monday, April 26, at a time and location to be announced.

The EWB chapter meets officially through the course Engineering Policy and Design taught by Sharon Jones, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering. However, students in all disciplines can join EWB without taking the class. For more information, visit the EWB web site.

The race will start 1 p.m. in front of Gilbert’s. Easton police officers will help escort runners through the streets of College Hill.

“The charity event will raise money for our chapter of EWB to send a small group of us to Honduras this May on a data-gathering mission of the areas we will be dealing with. We also want to inform students and the local community about the organization and what we are hoping to accomplish,” says mechanical engineering major Matt Young ’05 (Burke, Va.), a member of EWB and one of several event organizers. Other organizers are biology major Diane Mitchell ’05 (Bath, Pa.), civil engineering major Fidel Maltez ’05 (Hialeah, Fla.), and A.B. engineering major Sam Gutner ’05 (Topsfield, Mass.); all other members of EWB are assisting as well.

Students are encouraged to line up sponsors and either run or walk for five kilometers. Registration, which includes a T-shirt, is $10 for all participants. Today is the last day for official registration, but sign-ups can be done up to race day. People of all ages are encouraged to attend. For more information or to participate, contact Young at youngmg or x4974.

“Anyone can raise money even if they don’t want to be in the race,” he notes. “Local restaurants and companies have donated gift certificates that combine for a total of more than $450 worth of prizes to be awarded to winners of the race and students who raise the most money as well as raffles for all participants. Companies that have donated include Giant, Wegmans, Olive Garden, Don Pablo’s, Red Robin, and Campus Pizza, to name a few.”
