Lafayette has hired James Moyer as the first full-time band director in the College’s history.
Starting in August following a three-year run as administrator of the music department at Marywood University, Moyer’s duties will include directing the Pep Band and the Concert Band. He will also develop new courses in music technology.
Moyer has been the recipient of many honors and awards, including one from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour. He has played with many bands, orchestras, and symphonies; performed on 11 music recordings; and published writings in nine music publications. In May, he led the Concert Band in its spring concert with the Wind Chamber Ensembles.
He holds a bachelor of music education from Susquehanna University and both a master’s and doctorate from University of Oklahoma. During his graduate work at OU, he performed with the Oklahoma Symphony and Bartlesville Symphony. He then served as assistant director of bands for the Collinsville School District in Oklahoma.
In 1986, Moyer began a 12-year career as director of percussion studies and was also director of the Concert and Marching Bands at Millikin University in Illinois, where he built one of the largest percussion programs in the Midwest. He developed the university’s first classes in music technology and received two promotions and tenure in his first eight years.
In 1998, Moyer changed careers, serving as account executive for higher education in Central Illinois for Holcomb’s Education Resource. In 2000, he took a similar position with Apple Computer, covering all higher education accounts in New Jersey and Northeast Pennsylvania.
Returning to music, Moyer led Marywood’s music department through significant curriculum restructuring and program development, helping quadruple enrollment of the graduate program and expand recognition of the program regionally.
Moyer lives in Easton with his wife, Rosalie Moyer, a 1983 graduate of Shamokin Area High School. He continues as timpanist of the Allentown Band, America’s oldest civilian band, and performs with the Allentown Symphony.
Moyer graduated from Shamokin Area High School in 1976. He is the son of Robert and Jean Moyer, 824 E. Dewart St., Shamokin.
