Spotlight on Students in Their Hometown Newspapers
The Daily Times (on-line article), July 8:
Chemical engineering major Jessica Whitman ’05 (Fruitland, Md.) is conducting research this summer at Johns Hopkins University on how certain chemical compounds “congregate in geometric shapes with properties that affect such diverse items as time-release pills and laser beams.” She began studying this area at Lafayette as an EXCEL Scholar with James Ferri, assistant professor of chemical engineering.
The Express-Times, July 3:
In a Saturday editorial, the newspaper awarded a “trophy” to chemistry major Caitlin Sullivan ’05 (Bethlehem, Pa.), who has published her research in scientific journals. “Among her accomplishments was helping to develop a method of measuring the level of acetaminophen and caffeine in cold medicines. She has been invited to present her research at the American Chemical Society meeting next month.”

This summer, chemistry major Laura Hagopian ’06 (Chelmsford, Mass.) is creating new chemical compounds with catalytic properties in collaborative research with Chip Nataro, assistant professor of chemistry.
Butler Eagle, June 13:
Christine Bender ’04 (Gibsonia, Pa.) earned academic honors in economics and business after completing a research project on improving Medicaid access for the homeless. Also a psychology major, she received the Pepper Prize and earned membership in the Omicron Delta Epsilon (economics) and Psi Chi (psychology) academic honor societies.

John Kincaid, director of Lafayette’s Meyner Center for the Study of State and Local Government, is using a $153,060 National Endowment for the Humanities grant to hold an institute on state constitutions for 20 high school teachers from around the United States and Japan. Says Franco Crispi, who teaches advanced placement American government in Lanham, Md.: ”The seminar is a blast. Every educator here is here because they want to help kids.”

The selection of vice presidential nominee John Edwards was “a brilliant move,” according to Joshua Miller, professor of government and law, who noted that Edwards possesses qualities that Kerry lacks. “‘People are talking about Iraq. People are dying. And Kerry is out there making a speech about health care, which seems kind of irrelevant,’ Miller said‘I don’t believe Kerry has the love of the people. Maybe at this stage Clinton didn’t either,’ he said. ‘You do have the contrast of Clinton who’s charismatic and sexy and then you have Kerry who’s kind of stiff.’”

Daily Item (Sunbury, Pa.), June 22:
James Moyer has been hired as the first full-time band director at Lafayette. Starting in August, his duties will include directing the pep band and concert band and developing courses in music technology. He has been the recipient of many honors and awards, including one from Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour. He has played with many bands, orchestras, and symphonies; performed on 11 music recordings; and published writings in nine music publications.
