Following initial reports in USA Today, other newspapers in the United States and abroad, and ABC News Radio, articles on the marriage research shared by Jamila Bookwala, assistant professor of psychology, at the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in Honolulu, Hawaii, continued to run in newspapers across the nation, including The Washington Post. “Jamila Bookwala, a professor of psychology at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, reported that ‘negative spousal behaviors’ such as excessive demands or criticism seem to enhance the likelihood of developing chronic health problems, disability and perception of poor health,” reported the Post. “Bookwala, who drew on data from a national survey of people at least 50 years old and in their first marriage, said her study is one of the first to examine the impact of marriage quality in older couples.” Recent stories also ran in the Shreveport (La.) Times (Aug. 8), AARP Bulletin (Aug. 2), Chicago Sun-Times (Aug. 2), Arizona Republic (Aug. 2), Tucson (AZ) Citizen (Aug. 2), Connecticut Post (Aug. 4), Asbury Park (NJ) Press (Aug. 3), Norwich (CT) Bulletin (Aug. 2), and Idaho Statesman (Aug. 2). ABC News Radio affiliates that reported on her research included WSTC 1400 AM/WNLK-Radio 1350 AM of Norwalk, Conn. On Tuesday, an interview with Bookwala was part of the live radio program “A Touch of Grey,” which is broadcast on about 50 stations, including WOR in New York City.
Spotlight on Students in Their Hometown Newspapers
Staten Island Register, July 6:
Regina Lamendella ’04 (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned honors in biology by completing a yearlong research project guided by Lorraine Mineo, lecturer in biology and laboratory coordinator. She presented her research at the 80th meeting of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science in March. Lamendella graduated magna cum laude and was one of two graduating seniors to receive the Willis Roberts Hunt Biology Prize.

The Express-Times, Aug. 26:
First-year students Lianne Hansen (Ridgewood, N.J.), Sara Bergstrom (Howell, N.J.), Katie Lewis (Scarsdale, N.Y.), and Matt Vanderwall (Webster, N.Y.) painted the walls of the Easton Senior Center. “[They] volunteered for the public service project to help familiarize themselves with their new community and with other members of their class, organizers said.”
The Express-Times and The Morning Call, Aug. 21:
In a ceremony at the Williams Visual Arts Building, Gov. Edward G. Rendell presented Easton Mayor Phil Mitman with a check for $9 million in support of the Bushkill Creek Corridor and Village project. The grant includes $3 million that Lafayette will invest to continue revitalizing the North Third Street area at the base of College Hill, the gateway from downtown Easton to the campus.
The Express-Times, Aug. 3:
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission awarded grants to several area organizations, including $4,915 in funding to Lafayette’s Special Collections and College Archives.
