Lafayette Activities Forum will open the 2004-05 programming year with a concert by young guitarist Devon Sproule 9 p.m. Thursday at Gilberts.
LAF also will present the comedy of Jamie Lissow, whose TV appearances have included guest stints on Comedy Central and “The Tonight Show,” 10 p.m. Friday in the Farinon Center Snack Bar.
Sproule recorded her debut CD, Long Sleeve Story, with Dave Matthews Band bassist Stefan Lessard and top producer John Alagia. Her lastest recording, Upstate Songs, has been described by Rolling Stone Magazine as “perhaps the sweetest and most honest folk-pop album recorded this year. Sproule’s vocal and lyrical beauty is unmatched.” Critic Julie Gerstein recalls being “blown away by Devon’s live performance,” she says. “She brings something special to the genre…a sense of sweetness, innocence and clarity.” The magazine named the album one of its “Critics’ Top Albums 2003.”

Following a weekend at West Virginia’s NewSong Festival, Sproule performed Aug. 22 on National Public Radio’s “Mountain Stage” with Lisa Loeb, Ellis Paul, and others.
She has toured and/or shared stages with the likes of the Dave Matthews Band, Dan Bern, Erin McKeown, Guster, Eddie From Ohio, Nerissa and Katryna Nields, David Gray, Patty Larkin, Steve Forbert, and We’re About Nine.
Following a successful appearance at Montreal’s Just For Laugh’s Festival, Jamie Lissow was cited in Hollywood Reporter and Variety magazines the following week. He has made appearances on “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” (Jan. 6, 2004), “Star Search” (April 22, 2003), NBC’s “Late Friday” (Nov. 23rd, 2001), and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (Dec 3rd, 2001).
