Lafayette’s observance of World AIDS Day will include activities held over several days next week, ranging from a speaker and film screening to free HIV testing and a trip to see a Broadway show.

Psychology major and government & law minor Caryn Donohue ’06 (Garden City, N.Y.), HIV/AIDS program coordinator for the Landis Community Outreach Center, says the events are part of an awareness campaign. She hopes that students will think about the AIDS facts and figures cited on flyers posted around campus.

“I want them to think about their specific actions and the effects that HIV/AIDS has globally, as it is a major epidemic,” she says.

World AIDS Day is Dec. 1. The Landis Community Outreach Center, Brothers of Lafayette, Lafayette Activities Forum, and Lafayette Intercultural Networking Council are sponsoring the campus activities.

Monday through Wednesday, members of the campus community can show their solidarity for the fight against AIDS by buying and wearing one of the red ribbons on sale for $1 during lunch in the Farinon Center.

A speaker from the community will address “Personal Experiences with AIDS” noon Monday in Interfaith Chapel, Hogg Hall. Free lunch will be provided.

“I think the brown bag lunch will provide insight on what it means to be infected, and hopefully, it will make people slow down even if it’s just for five minutes to really comprehend what it could mean and how it changes lives,” says Donohue.

Tickets to see Rent on Broadway Thursday night will be on sale noon-1 p.m. Wednesday outside Limburg Theater. Tickets cost $20 each and include transportation to New York City and admission. Each student may buy two tickets and payment is restricted to cash only. The bus will leave the William Center 4:30 p.m. and return around midnight.

Free HIV testing will be available 12:30-5 p.m. Wednesday on the second floor of the Bailey Health Center. The test, Orasure, takes approximately 20 minutes, is confidential, and uses an oral swab with no need to draw blood. Orasure is 99.6% effective at determining a person’s HIV status.

Later Wednesday night, the Academy Award-winning movie Philadelphia will be screened 8-10:30 p.m. in Limburg Theater. This event is free and pizza will be provided.

From Wednesday through Friday, six squares from the AIDS Quilt will be on display 9 a.m.-9 p.m. in the Farinon Center’s Marlo Room. AIDS Quilt squares are hand-made as a tribute to those who died from HIV or AIDS.
