The Volleyball Club made a perfect start to its season last weekend, taking an early share of first place in the North Division of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Volleyball Conference.
The Leopards, who are tied with Bloomsburg University in the standings at 2-0, will compete again 10 a.m. Sunday in a tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College. The other teams are Muhlenberg, Bucknell University, and Montclair State University.
In two matches at Kamine Gymnasium Saturday, Lafayette swept DeSales University (1-1) 25-12, 25-14, 26-24, then proceeded to blank Moravian College (0-4) 25-11, 25-13, 25-19.
Top performances were turned in by civil engineering major Kyle DeLabar ’05 (North Catasauqua, Pa.), who made 12 kills with five errors in 33 hitting attempts, and added five blocks; mechanical engineering major Wayne Scott ’05 (Moscow, Pa.), who had eight kills with six errors in 24 hitting attempts, and five blocks; Scott Bortz ’08 (Allentown, Pa.), who contributed four kills with no errors in 11 hitting attempts, and two blocks; biochemistry major Ryan Evans ’05 (Mohrsville, Pa.), who totaled 49 assists and three kills in three attempts; and A.B. engineering major Russ Dinardi ’07 (Pleasantville, N.Y.), who had four digs and two aces.
“I was a little worried coming into Saturday’s matches because there are a lot of new faces that haven’t played much together,” says DeLabar, club president. “This year we have eight new players, six of whom are freshmen, giving us the highest number of active players, 18 total, since the club’s formation. After witnessing our play on Saturday and during practice this week, I am confident that we can be a major competitor in our division this year.”
The Volleyball Club has earned a spot in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Volleyball Conference’s playoff tournament for the past three seasons.
