Professors spoke at an open forum on the Republican plan to privatize a portion of Social Security Monday night in the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights auditorium.
The event was organized by College Democrats as a response to the campus presentation given by GOP Sen. Rick Santorum last week.
Scheduled speakers included Arnold Offner, Cornelia F. Hugel Professor of History, and Joshua Sanborn, associate professor of history.
“The purpose of the event is to provide an opportunity for students to ask questions about and discuss the Social Security plan being put forth by numerous Republican politicians, including Senator Santorum, who was here on Friday,” said Christina Morgan ’05 (Flemington, N.J.), president of College Democrats and a double major in history and government & law and public health, before the forum. “Obviously there is more to the debate than one could get from hearing Santorum speak, so the forum is an effort to provide a more balanced look at the issues.”
