Lafayette students were honored for academic achievement and citizenship on campus and in the community at the 2005 Diversity Awards ceremony April 6 at Pfenning Alumni Center.
Receiving awards were seniors Jairo Amarillo, Reco Collins, Maya Freelon, Britney McCoy, and Inku Subedi; junior Maurice Bennett; and first-year students Viktorija Gecyte, Al-Amin Kheraj, Huong Nguyen, Sandra Rodriguez, and Hugo Sindelar.
Several of the annual awards are sponsored by Lafayette alumni, including Darlyne Bailey `74, vice president for academic affairs at Columbia University Teachers College; Eugene Deloatch `59, dean of the School of Engineering at Morgan State University; Otis Ellis `89, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; Leroy D. Nunery `77, vice president for business services at University of Pennsylvania; Jeffrey D. Robinson `80, senior partner in the law firm of Baach Robinson & Lewis PLLC, Washington, D.C.; and Riley Temple `71, partner in the law firm of Halprin and Temple, Washington, D.C., and secretary of Lafayette’s Board of Trustees.
Also honored was Jadrien O. Ellison ’02, coordinator of Intercultural Development, who received the Association of Black Collegians (ABC) Recognition Award. The award was presented by McCoy, who is president of ABC.
The Lafayette Intercultural Networking Council (LINC) Recognition Award, which went to the International Students Association (ISA), was accepted by senior Oliver Bowen, ISA president.

Darlyne Bailey ’74 Award for Excellence in the Humanities And Social Sciences. Awarded to a student whose academic/artistic accomplishments reflect an outstanding level of scholarship and advance understanding on an important issue.

Dr. Eugene Deloatch `59 Award for First-Year Achievement.

Otis Ellis `89 Scholar Athlete Award. Awarded to a successful varsity athlete who has achieved an outstanding level of scholarship.
Maurice Bennett `06 (economics and business), Philadelphia, Pa.
Leroy Nunery `71 Award for Intellectual Citizenship. Awarded to a student whose research on important social, political or economic issues advances knowledge and involves the student in activities within a community.
Jairo Amarillo ’05 (A.B. engineering/art), Haverhill, Mass
Jeffrey Robinson `80 Award for Leadership. An accomplished student who is also characterized by noteworthy leadership in College activities and student life.
Britney McCoy ’05 (A.B. engineering/government and law), Upper Marlboro, Md.
Riley Temple `71 Award for Creative and Artistic Citizenship. Awarded to a student whose creative scholarship in the visual and/or performance arts contributes to knowledge on societal issues of multi-cultural or inter-cultural concerns.
Maya Freelon ’05 (art), Durham, N.C.
David A. Portlock Award for Cross-Cultural Relationships. Awarded to a student who has worked diligently to promote cross-cultural relationships on campus or in the community.
