The Pi Beta Phi sorority is sponsoring a Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society 7 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday at the Kirby Sports Center indoor track.

The goal is to “honor people who have fought and continue to fight cancer as patients and their families and friends,” says neuroscience major Elizabeth Lilley ’06 (Westwood, N.J.), vice president of mental advancement for Pi Beta Phi. “Raising money for the American Cancer Society is an important cause, and we have received an outpouring of support from administrators, Greeks, and independents.”

Each team will have at least one member walking on the track during the 12 hours of the event. At about 9 p.m., a luminary-lighting ceremony will be held.

Relay teams of any size can register for $10 per member, although larger amounts are welcome. Each team is to raise money through donations or the purchase of luminaries in memory of a cancer victim or in celebration of those who have survived cancer.

“This is an excellent way to unite the Lafayette community and help people whose lives have been affected by cancer,” says Lilley. “As a campus, we have strength and purpose, and together we can make a difference.”

Teams will seek donations based simply on their participation in the event, regardless of how many times team members circle the track. There is no registration deadline.
