Washington State Community College in Marietta, Ohio, has named Alfred R. Hoffmann ‘62 vice president for academic and student affairs. He will oversee the college’s academic and student services and its Center for Business and Technology.
Since 1996, Hoffmann has been dean of Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, Va., where he created and led the Alliance for Industrial and Engineering Technologies, receiving several grants to fund the program. He also worked with five college presidents to provide professional development programs for faculty, and with state and federal representatives to attract high-tech businesses to the region.
A chemistry and biology graduate, Hoffman received a master’s in environmental health/toxicology and a doctorate in pharmaceutical biochemistry/toxicology from Temple University. He also holds an MLE degree from Harvard’s Graduate Leadership Institute.
Hoffman says his most memorable professor during freshman year was chemistry professor Bernard Marklein.
“His early morning lecture was often punctuated by a piece of chalk well aimed at a sleeping classmate in a nearby seat,” he recalls.
