With almost 20 years of experience in the energy industry, Gary Stephenson ’86 has joined DPL Inc. as vice president of commercial operations.
He is responsible for managing DPL’s energy commodity portfolio, with the goal of maximizing the value of its 4,400 megawatts of generation while minimizing overall risk. Specifically, he manages DPL’s products, such as energy, capacity, and spinning reserves, as well as fuel procurement.
Prior to joining DPL, Stephenson was vice president of commercial operations for Intergen and vice president of portfolio management for PG&E National Energy Group. He has also held positions with General Electric and Northeast Utilities.
“The energy business is a very complex industry, shaped by regulatory issues and the usual economic forces of supply and demand,” he says. “And what I find interesting is that this industry is very important in terms of national security.”
An electrical engineering graduate, Stephenson received his master’s in electrical engineering from Polytechnic University and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.
“Lafayette’s unique combination of engineering and a small liberal arts school setting was really great,” he says. “It was helpful for me in the business world because you need to have the ability to interface with all different kinds of people.”
