Fine Point Technologies has added William R. Wagner ’89 to its board of directors.
Wagner, chief marketing officer for Fiberlink Communications Corp., brings much marketing experience to the board. His expertise in corporate marketing, marketing communications, and business development helped Fiberlink grow into a leading provider of mobile workforce solutions.
“It’s always exciting to help a young company as it strives to get to the next level,” he says. “The last five years of my career have been spent growing Fiberlink from a regional technology company to an $80 million global enterprise that has been recognized as an innovator in our market. Hopefully I’m in a position to share my experience with Fine Point’s management team so it can avoid some of the mistakes we made.”
He believes Fine Point’s challenge is “to redefine its space – to change the rules of the game so it can assert leadership versus larger, more well-established competitors.”
Wagner, a history graduate, says his liberal arts education was an excellent background for his business career.
“Many people I meet in the tech sector are surprised I have a liberal arts undergraduate degree. Actually, studying history as an undergraduate was great preparation for the business world,” he explains. “The most important skill I learned from people like Dick Welch, Bob Weiner, and Don Miller was how to think critically and not accept the conventional view of events. While I certainly learned a great deal of business-specific skills at The Wharton School when getting my MBA, I credit the well rounded curriculum of Lafayette with giving me the foundation for my success.”
Wagner served 11 years at AT&T Corp. in sales and marketing positions that included working for the Office of the Chairman team that developed AT&T’s corporate branding strategy. A frequent guest lecturer at Wharton on technology- and leadership-related topics, Wagner is an adviser to several Philadelphia and New Jersey startups and is involved with Eastern Technology Council.
