Chemistry graduate Caitlin Sullivan ’05 (Bethlehem, Pa.) is putting her Lafayette education to use as a personal care chemist at National Starch Chemical Co. in Bridgewater, N.J.
“Personal care is something everyone can relate to, from the lotion you put on your skin to the shampoo you use in the shower,” says Sullivan, who also is enrolled part-time in the MBA program at Lehigh University. “And being able to develop new products that are seen in the market is a very fulfilling feeling.”
“The strong research experience that I got from Lafayette College really set me apart in the chemical industry and the intensive academics prepared me well for this position,” she adds.
Sullivan had two articles based on her EXCEL Scholars research with Joseph Sherma, Larkin Professor Emeritus of Chemistry, accepted for publication in scientific journals and presented her findings at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Philadelphia.
Last summer, she conducted research with the Center for Emeritus Scientists in Academic Research, a program affiliated with the Merck & Co. pharmaceutical company.
She received Lafayette’s American Chemical Society Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry, presented to the junior chemistry major with the greatest achievement in the study of analytical chemistry.
