Lafayette’s widespread opportunities for undergraduate research has led Sigma Xi, the international honor society for scientific and engineering research, to award the College a Certificate of Recognition for Top Electing Chapters.
Michael Stark, assistant professor of physics, accepted the award from Sigma Xi at its annual meeting in Seattle.
“Since many liberal arts colleges and research universities have chapters of Sigma Xi, it is evidence of our success at engaging undergraduate students in research that Lafayette College is among the schools with the most student research participation,” he says.
Students offered membership include seniors in the spring semester of a yearlong honors thesis and any students recommended by a professor for their participation in scientific research.
Many seniors will become members of Sigma Xi later this semester. Seniors who already belong to Sigma Xi include:
- Sharon Bandstra (Midland Park, N.J.), biochemistry major
- Carolyn Heffner (Cleona, Pa.), physics
- Jamie Jarusiewicz (Sayreville, N.J.), biochemistry
- Michael Kaczmarczik (Elkins Park, Pa.), physics and philosophy
- Charles Lemken (Emerson, N.J.), biology
- Danielle Martin (Farmington, Conn.), biochemistry
- Nicholas Masluk (Bethlehem, Pa.), physics
- Amy Spooner (Clifton Park, N.Y.), geology
- Meredith White (Andover, Mass.), biochemistry
